Phone Number Search in Wollongong

A number on a phone bill, a missed call at three in the morning, a message from somebody who will not say who they are. We investigate unknown numbers for people throughout Wollongong and report what can lawfully be established about who is behind them. If the answer is that you do not need us, we will tell you that.

Wollongong is the heart of the Illawarra, an hour and a half south of the Sydney CBD. Call 1300 773 293 at any hour, or read on for how we handle phone number searches here.

Working in Wollongong

Working in Wollongong means understanding a coastal strip pinned between the escarpment and the sea, where movement funnels onto a small number of roads. Our operatives plan around that rather than turning up and hoping. Where a matter runs across several days we rotate vehicles and positions so that a familiar car never becomes part of the scenery.

We work regularly across Shellharbour, Kiama, Dapto, Corrimal, Thirroul and Port Kembla, and we travel further into New South Wales where a matter calls for it.

What happens once you engage us in Wollongong

  1. You give us the number, the context and any screenshots or records you have
  2. We identify the carrier and the type of service, which tells us a great deal on its own
  3. Public directories, business registrations and listings are searched
  4. We check the number against known scam and complaint reporting
  5. Where the number connects to a business or a listed person, we verify it independently
  6. We stop and refund where a prepaid service leaves no lawful trail

Fees and how we charge

Here is how the billing works, without the vagueness. Phone number searches are quoted as a fixed fee because the scope is well defined. If the number turns out to be a prepaid service with no public trail, we will tell you early rather than continuing to charge for searches that cannot produce anything. We will also tell you when we think you are about to spend money for very little return.

Phone Number Search and the law in New South Wales

It is worth being clear about the legal position. This is where honesty matters. Telecommunications data held by carriers is protected under Commonwealth law and is available to law enforcement under warrant, not to private investigators or to the public. Nobody can lawfully sell you a subscriber name straight from a carrier database, and anybody who offers to is either lying or committing an offence. What we can do is work the lawful record thoroughly. The Surveillance Devices Act 2007 (NSW) in New South Wales separately restricts the recording of calls. If we are asked to do something that falls outside those rules, we will say no and explain why, and we will suggest a lawful way at the same problem.

This is general information rather than legal advice. If your matter is already before a court, speak to your solicitor about what evidence will assist and we will work to that brief.

Who we are

A few facts about us, so you can check them. Sydney Private Investigations has been operating since 2002 and trades as GORA Investigations Pty Ltd, ABN 34 600 932 438. We are a licensed agency. We hold NSW Master Licence 412080174. Every operative who works on your matter holds a current individual licence.

If your matter really belongs with police or with a solicitor, we will tell you that instead of selling you surveillance.

Frequently asked questions

Can you tell me the name behind any mobile number?

Not from a carrier. That data is protected and only accessible to law enforcement through a warrant. We work the lawful public and open source record, which resolves a meaningful proportion of numbers but not all of them.

What can you find out?

The carrier and service type, whether the number is listed to a business or a person, its appearance in public records and listings, and its digital footprint across the open web.

Will the person know I searched their number?

No. The searching is passive and nobody is contacted.

What should I do about threatening calls?

Report them to police, keep every message and note the times. Our report can support that complaint, but a criminal matter belongs with police and we will say so.

How quickly will I get the result?

Most searches are completed within one to two business days.
