Phone Number Search in Canberra

Phone Number Search in Canberra

An unknown number that keeps appearing is a legitimate reason to want answers. We run phone number searches for clients across Canberra, working from the number itself through public listings, business records, open source data and the wider digital footprint attached to it. If the answer is that you do not need us, we will tell you that.

Canberra is the national capital and the seat of federal government. Call 1300 773 293 at any hour, or read on for how we handle phone number searches here.

Reasons people in Canberra get in touch

  • A scam caller has taken money and you need something to give police
  • A business contact will only communicate from an unlisted number
  • You want to verify that a person is who they claim to be before meeting
  • Silent calls are arriving at all hours and you need them to stop
  • A number appears in documents relevant to a legal matter
  • A number keeps calling and hanging up

What Canberra is like to work in

Working in Canberra means understanding a planned city of distinct town centres separated by open space. Our operatives plan around that rather than turning up and hoping. Where a matter runs across several days we rotate vehicles and positions so that a familiar car never becomes part of the scenery.

We work regularly across Belconnen, Woden, Tuggeranong, Gungahlin, Queanbeyan and Civic, and we travel further into Australian Capital Territory where a matter calls for it.

What happens once you engage us in Canberra

  1. You give us the number, the context and any screenshots or records you have
  2. We identify the carrier and the type of service, which tells us a great deal on its own
  3. Public directories, business registrations and listings are searched
  4. We check the number against known scam and complaint reporting
  5. We stop and refund where a prepaid service leaves no lawful trail
  6. You receive a written report on what was established and what could not be

Fees and how we charge

We would rather talk about money early than surprise you later. Phone number searches are quoted as a fixed fee because the scope is well defined. If the number turns out to be a prepaid service with no public trail, we will tell you early rather than continuing to charge for searches that cannot produce anything. You can stop at any review point. We do not lock people into blocks they no longer need.

Phone Number Search and the law in Australian Capital Territory

It is worth being clear about the legal position. This is where honesty matters. Telecommunications data held by carriers is protected under Commonwealth law and is available to law enforcement under warrant, not to private investigators or to the public. Nobody can lawfully sell you a subscriber name straight from a carrier database, and anybody who offers to is either lying or committing an offence. What we can do is work the lawful record thoroughly. The Listening Devices Act 1992 (ACT) in Australian Capital Territory separately restricts the recording of calls. If we are asked to do something that falls outside those rules, we will say no and explain why, and we will suggest a lawful way at the same problem.

This is general information rather than legal advice. If your matter is already before a court, speak to your solicitor about what evidence will assist and we will work to that brief.

Who we are

You are entitled to know who you are hiring. Sydney Private Investigations has been operating since 2002 and trades as GORA Investigations Pty Ltd, ABN 34 600 932 438. We hold NSW Master Licence 412080174 and VIC Master Licence Z6583160S. Work in Australian Capital Territory is conducted in accordance with the territory security industry legislation, and where a locally licensed operative is required we engage one rather than cutting a corner.

We do not use aggressive sales scripts and we do not chase people who decide against proceeding. If the answer is no, that is a perfectly fine answer.

Frequently asked questions

Can you tell me the name behind any mobile number?

Not from a carrier. That data is protected and only accessible to law enforcement through a warrant. We work the lawful public and open source record, which resolves a meaningful proportion of numbers but not all of them.

What can you find out?

The carrier and service type, whether the number is listed to a business or a person, its appearance in public records and listings, and its digital footprint across the open web.

Will the person know I searched their number?

No. The searching is passive and nobody is contacted.

What should I do about threatening calls?

Report them to police, keep every message and note the times. Our report can support that complaint, but a criminal matter belongs with police and we will say so.

Can you help if the number is overseas?

Sometimes. International numbers are harder and the available record varies considerably by country. We will assess it before quoting.
